THE HOSPITALIER is a captivating novel about an English Knight, who is about to face  financial ruin when he is inspired by the Angel Uriel to join the Knights of Hospital of Saint John and go the Holy lands for the Third Crusade.  He is told to care for the sick pilgrims in the Holy Land and defend them against the Muslims.  There is once catch, -- the Angel insists he remain anonymous until he fulfills God’s mission.

The Unknown Knight not only sees to it that the sick and wounded are cared for but he also participates in  the battles of the Third Crusade. The Christian and Muslim armies battle each other with the belief they are the rightful heirs to the Holy lands.

The Unknown’s action in these battles causes King Richard of England, the head of the Christian armies, and Saladin, the warrior head of the Muslims, to admire the Unknown Knight. They both feel the Unknown is a man who walks with God on his side.  .

The novel comes to life through the stories of those who are close to the Unknown Knight during his journey in the Third Crusade. . They are all seeking redemption for something they did wrong in their past. These events in the past whether perceived or real gnaws at their souls. It is only through their service in the crusade and their love of Christ do they eventually find redemption. This personal touch gives the reader an insight into what drives this band of Hospitalier Knights to undergo the hardships (miserable living condition, starvation, and death) of the crusade.

Mr. Lessard  has taken a well known story and injected the human side to  make it a book well worth reading.
