The American Doctor of MoCay – Letters from a Vietnam Medic

Author:  M. B. Peters

Publisher:  Printshop

Reviewer: Bill McDonald – President of the MWSA

Touching Letters Home from Vietnam Tell the Story!

Maria Peters lost her husband in Vietnam in 1966. He was a medic in a small village on a delta island called MoCay. He was married and had three children when he left for his tour of duty on his birthday back in 1965— still filled with dreams and much life left to live. Mrs. Peters has put together an emotional map of his “tour of duty” up through the time he was killed by sharing most all of his letters home. “The American Doctor of MoCay” is a collection of Sgt. Larry Peter’s personal thoughts, comments, observations and worries that he recorded in those letters.

This is book will move you emotionally in its understated style. Most all veterans who have been in any war zone, knows that you do not write things in your letters that will worry those folks you love back home—so we know there are many things left unsaid or glossed over with regards to the daily dangers he faced in Nam.

There is a good picture of what this soldier was doing for the children and people of MoCay. He helped the local orphanage and school and had clothing and toys and school supplies shipped to them from America. He was also involved in many other projects for the people of that island village. America should be proud of its military men and women because Larry was not alone doing these things in Vietnam.

We get a view of Sgt. Peters as a real humanitarian and one who was very concerned about others. I think he would be proud that his wife is now sharing his story at this point in history. We have had so much misinformation and media coverage over the past several decades about Vietnam veterans. It is stories like this one that should get people to realize that there were many such men over their giving their lives to help total strangers.

This is a book well worth the price to buy and read. The 109 pages can be read in a couple of hours without any great effort. I recommend this book to read. You will end up liking this soldier that Mrs. Peters was married to very much.
