MWSA Book Review

The Sobs of Autumn's Violins

Author:  A. R. Homer

Publisher:  Llumina Press

Reviewer: Bill McDonald – President of the MWSA

An Intelligent Spy Thriller from WWII

Author A. R. Homer creates a captivating story of the D-day invasion and all that leads up to it by mixing actual historic facts with both real and fictional characters. His novel, “The Sobs of Autumn’s Violins – A Novel of War and Love,” is a wonderfully creative and devious mixture of history and imagination.

Although this is only Homer’s second novel, he is already being viewed as one of the more credible and exciting up-and-coming mystery, thriller writers of his generation. This book is not just a story of WWII spies and espionage; it is laced with great interplay between characters and is partially a love story as well.

Actual facts are weaved into and throughout the storyline which adds a touch of realism and believability to the plot. The only thing lacking for this book to make it to the best seller’s list is marketing and being “discovered" by the media. This book is a must read for all avid readers of thriller or WWII books. This book is destined for greatness and gets the MWSA Highest Book Rating – FIVE STARS!

The Resistance forces carry the battle to the Germans in preparation for the D-Day landings in June of 1944. They discover that the Germans are actively searching for these “freedom fighters.” Committed to their necessary role in preparation for securing freedom, they do not hesitate.

This also is a novel of heroism and personal commitment on the part of allied infiltrators assisting dedicated members of the French Resistance. Death is in the air constantly; betrayal and discovery are companions at every turn.

The title “The Sobs of Autumn’s Violins” is the first half of the radio message from the allies identifying the time of the invasion of Fortress Europe. It sets in motion widespread sabotage efforts against the German troops and their roads and railways. It is the moment that these conquered people have been anxiously awaiting.

Each moment the lives of these brave individuals is at deathly risk. The author presents the reader with descriptions of the actual events which took place. You are able at last, to understand many facets of the initial preparation to land the assault troops on the beaches of Normandy.
