Historical Juvenile Fiction

This book is about the Battle of Gettysburg as witnessed by two teenagers.  Their story covers the major events of the battle and Lincoln’s address to dedicate the national cemetery.  The major characters of the battle are introduced to the protagonists in novel fashion.

There are no maps or illustrations in the book.  A map of Gettysburg would have helped the intended audience visualize the flow of battle and the movement of the protagonists.

The treatment of the dedication ceremony was interesting.  Edward Everett, renowned orator, speaks for hours, boring the young people.  But Lincoln’s address, delivered in less than two minutes, has the impact to immortalize the battle and its participants.

The intended audience, juveniles, may find this treatment of the Battle of Gettysburg too simplistic.  It does provide an accounting of the civilian population and their survival.

This is a “three star” book.
