To politicians or Americans who say Americans are warmongers, that we should not be in Iraq, or that our soldiers are mistreating captured prisoners…… a reading of "My Son is a Marine" by Jo Anne Allen would melt them into silence, just as surely as if Christ were writing with His finger in the sands of Iraq. .......Semper Fi! By Pat McGrath Avery and Joyce Faulkner

Non-fiction History, Korea

Soft Cover: $17.95

Hard Cover: $26.95

In October 1950, two hundred and fifty American POWs were shot in North Korea.  Less than 30 survived. Today, there are less than 12 still alive.

Sunchon Tunnel Massacre Survivors is the story of how these men were captured, interrogated, tortured, marched for hundreds of miles, and finally, taken out of a train on a cold autumn evening and executed.  Taken from interviews of those men who are still alive, official debriefings, congressional testimonies, and other historical sources, this is an important book that details a little known event in America's Forgotten War, Korea.  For the true historian, there are a few surprises as well.  For the families of those lost in Korea, here's what happened to Valdor, Sherman, Ed, Bob, George, Walt, Bill and Jim.

Barinelli's War

by Gene Basilici

Fiction, Korea, Thriller

$16.95

The Korean War rages in Southeast Asia. Every night the North Koreans hurl themselves against the outnumbered Americans who hold the Pusan Perimeter, and every night the overextended defenders are thinned even more.

Into this maelstrom lands Rick Barinelli, a teenager fresh out of Basic and is thrown immediately onto the front line. A natural leader with an innate understanding of combat, he’s able to command and hold the all-important “Bowling Alley” sector. Barinelli’s successes on the battlefield earn him quick promotions.

The Inchon landing relieves the pressure on Pusan and Barinelli’s platoon takes the point for an American offensive. At Hungnam, they’re ordered to the rear and reorganized as a reconnaissance company, while the Army’s Tenth Corps and First Marine Division advance to the Chinese border.

But a quarter-million Chinese secretly infiltrate the mountain passes and surround the Americans with orders to annihilate them all. The only escape route is along a narrow road past the Chosin Reservoir through the Funchilin Pass to Hungnam and safety. The Funchilin must be held. But when Barinelli’s company commander suddenly disappears, the survival of over twenty thousand men falls on him.

With fewer than two hundred men under his command, Barinelli faces the pressures of leadership in battle. More importantly, he learns of faithlessness and heroism and the inner gauntlet each soldier must pass through to survive.

REVIEW:

"His words drip in blood, courage and heroism! It is a flag waving red, white and blue tribute without the band, the parade or the flag! It is a tribute to those who did fight there even if it had to be told though a fictional story. It is told with dignity and clarity of purpose. You know who the heroes are and root for them." -- Bill McDonald

The Wall of Broken Dreams

by Duke Barrett

Fiction, Thriller, Adventure, Vietnam

$14.95

Duke will give MWSA members a significant discount.

The trajectory of the bullet that ripped into the young paratroopers chest, knocked him on his backside thus saving him the added indignity of laying face down in the mud of the monsoon drenched jungle floor. With life rapidly escaping his body through the gaping
wound, Johnny dreams of being with Mai, a beautiful Eurasian girl he’d only recently met and fell in love with on an in-country R&R at Vung Tau. To be back in the “world,” to play his guitar and to live out his life with Mai consumed his every thought.

Shortly after returning to his combat unit, Johnny Richards, a cocky Irish, blue-eyed blues guitarist from the streets of Chicago, is gravely wounded on a combat air-assault into an enemy stronghold, after taking a bullet for a buddy. Are Johnny and Mai allowed to live out their dreams? Does the bullet that cut him down cut short his young adventurous life and their dreams? In 1983, at The Vietnam Memorial, better known as “The Wall,” Johnny’s hopes, dreams and survival come face to face with the emotional but spiritual realization that is his.

The Wall Of Broken Dreams is an adventure for sure, as any Vietnam War story should be. More than that though, it is also an inspirational story of the hopes and dreams of a young man serving his country with an elite army combat platoon in Vietnam.

The story appeals not only to the military adventure reader but also to the reader seeking an inspirational message. The Wall Of Broken Dreams is an adventure with an emotional punch.

REVIEW:

“Duke Barrett takes the sacred elements of the “Nam
Experience” and weaves them into a synthesis that is the true,
fundamental foundation of any authentic story about the war in
Vietnam, be it a memoir or a work of fiction, and makes it a
meaningful background to his novel.

“This story is an adventure but be prepared for an emotional
and inspirational journey, as well. But then, when you wake up,
maybe all that you just read was just a dream!” -- W. H. “Bill” McDonald Jr., Past President and founder of The Military Writers Society of America (MWSA)

So often we think about war in abstract terms but
Vietnam vet,  Duke Barrett, has made the traumatic
and long-lasting implications of battle spring to life
in this poignant story about the courage, loyalty,
patriotism and conflict of a young soldier.  We root
for him to realize his dreams, knowing fully well
that the deck is stacked against him. -- Sigrid Macdonald, editor and author of D'Amour Road

"They say that when death is near, one's life flashes before there eyes. "The Wall Of Broken Dreams" is a story of life, and trying to survive in the Vietnam War. Johnny Richards took a bullet for one of his companions and nearly died. He somehow survives and realizes what's important, life and his recently found love that he found on his tour of duty, Mai. A story that will inspire Vietnam vets and civilian alike, "The Wall Of broken Dreams" is highly recommended to those seeking a good historical fiction story." ~ Midwest Book Review

Hunting with Tigers

By Gene Basilici

Fiction, Vietnam, Thriller

$29.95

During the Vietnamese War, a Washington-approved sanctuary for enemy troops in Laos and Cambodia is a recipe for disaster, but a covert CIA operation made up of Special Forces volunteers deemed expendable, penetrates the borders and neutralizes the enemy's advantage. The Green Berets, Rick Barinelli, Warren Fahey, and Bob Akamura, make a pact: If any one of them goes missing, the others will commit to, "rescue, ransom, or revenge."

Barinelli, conflicted with a growing passion for a beautiful Vietnamese woman, Ai Dao, gains distinction for intel successes that disrupt the Tet Offensive and becomes known to the enemy as "the Gray Ghost". Hanoi orders General Wong to capture or kill him regardless of cost, and the brilliant and sadistic Wong spins an elaborate trap. He orchestrates the kidnapping of Ai Dao, but captures the headstrong Akamura instead. Now, against harrowing odds, it's up to Barinelli and Fahey to attempt their rescue.

Racing to a shattering climax, Hunting With Tigers illustrates how ordinary men can rise to acts of selfless heroism within the savagery of war.

Strictly a Loner

By Kathy L. Baumgarten

Non-fiction, Memoir

$10.95

Softcover, bound, 112 pages; color cover, 32 b&w images. Non-fiction;  Biography/Memoir.
ISBN 0-9713928-9-7.

In this off-beat yet personal memoir, Plattsburgh author  and retired Air National Guardsman Kathy L. Baumgarten reminisces about "inheriting" a millionaire along with her purchase of an old rooming house. The tale unfolds near the old Plattsburgh Air Force Base in Northern New York State.

Over seven years, Earl, a quiet old loner and  military retiree from the South, slowly endeared  himself to the new owners of his rooming house. Sometimes just an  amusing rascal, he by turns confounded and tortured the author with his unusual habits, which she shares here with readers. In this book you'll also learn how he made his fortune. Always dignified, nonetheless he retained an air of secrecy about his past, keeping his distance from the world. Truly, he was a man that everyone saw, and no one really knew.

Told here for the first time is the true account of a retired Air Force  TSgt, reclusive hoarder and secret millionaire. Strictly a Loner also serves as a vehicle to examine society’s attitudes toward money, family, mental illness, and aging.

REVIEW:
"Whenever someone writes the story of the North Country, it's always sprinkled with tales of the unique people who have lived here but, surely, no one could have been more unique than Earl, the star of STRICTLY A LONER. The stories that comprise his life epitomize the
flavor of the unique characters of the region.

Kathy tells Earl's story with sensitivity, humor and love. You will laugh, wonder and maybe even cry. You will compare Earl to people that you have known, and, in the end, realize, as I did, that there  was absolutely no one like Earl." -Foxy Gagnon, hailed by the Plattsburgh Press Republican as "One of the North Country's best-known pundits, raconteurs and general characters." Is Anybody Listening?

by Barbara Birchim

Nonfiction, Vietnam

AuthorHouse

Hardcover:  $ 31.50

Softcover:  $ 21.75

IS ANYBODY LISTENING? tells of dignitaries, presidents and those involved with the POW/MIA issue as I’ve known it since November 1968 when my husband, a Special Forces officer, became missing-in-action.

The pages reveal my feelings and torment during my

many trips to Southeast Asia in search of answers, and my frustrations while wandering the halls of Washington D.C. for help.

The book was written to show the issue’s insidious

cover-up and my commitment to the truth.

REVIEWS:

This book is very good...It is well written and a fast read. I could not put it down.  The story is gut-wrenching and I have come away, once again, very angry and frustrated with out government!  It tells a story of a POW'S wife and her quest for the "real" truth behind her husband's disappearance. The lengths she has gone to to get answers are unreal. She is a hero herself for standing up and never giving up. This is one of my more favorite books regarding the Vietnam Pow's. ~ C. O'neal

This is a heart breaking account of seeking the truth through the govt. red tape. Evidence supports the fact that we left servicemen behind in Laos and Cambodia. As former military, I am deeply saddened by what appears to be true. Through the pipeline, President Reagan was the last Commander in Chief to sanction rescue missions into S.E. Asia to search for POW s. Former SPEC OP WARRIORS are very tight lipped on this subject. Former Special Forces Sgt. Isaac Camacho escaped from Laos in 1965 and was never debriefed until the early seventies. Only a handful of military men escaped from captivity during the Vietnam War. Why did the govt. never utilize their knowledge? General Tighe, former director of the Defense Intell. Agency 1974 - 1981 has stated that he believed we had indeed left servicemen behind. ~ FRANK ROCKER "ROCKN IN SO CAL

Behold an Ashen Horse

By Lee Boyland

Fiction, Iraq/Afghanistan

$20.00

Five American cities are destroyed by Islamic terrorists’ nuclear bombs. General George Alexander, Secretary of Homeland Security, survives the attack and becomes the 45th President of the U.S. The attack’s impact on the nation is devastating. Millions dead or injured. The economy is on the verge of total collapse. The new president does what has to be done to save the nation.

REVIEWS

Wonderfully patriotic sequel!  Author Lee Boyland left his readers hanging at the end of THE RINGS OF ALLAH. Five nuclear devices were placed in the United States, but would the US be able to react in time?

BEHOLD, AN ASHEN HORSE picks up the story right where RINGS left off. The US, mired in liberal politics, bureaucracy, and political correctness, doesn't react, and the resulting "Day of Islam" costs the lives of millions of Americans. The entire government is wiped out in the blink of an eye, except retired Air Force General George Alexander, who is serving as the Secretary of Homeland Security. Alexander becomes President, establishes a government, and sets forth to find and punish those responsible. The release of nuclear weapons is authorized, and President Alexander vows that this time there will be no "unfinished business."

This book has plenty of technological details, but the author does a great job of keeping things moving and not letting technology bog down the story; the descriptions are simple but accurate. Boyland also does a great job of developing his characters, and you can't help but fall in love with President Alexander as he pulls out all the stops and runs roughshod over the liberal bureaucrats who try to stop him from saving the United States and taking vengeance on those who attacked her.

If you ever felt that the US needs to step up and act like the superpower she is, THIS is the book for you! - Rob Ballister, MWSA

Behold, an Ashen Horse is a stunning, riveting story plausible enough to be tomorrow’s headlines.  Buckle your seatbelts…this is a nail-biting ride. - Joe Weber, New York Times best-selling author

The novel of the year has arrived.

Forget about Patterson, King, Grisham and company. If you want at long last to read a work that is intelligent, gripping, and truly terrifying, pick up a copy of Lee Boyland's BEHOLD AN ASHEN HORSE. Mr. Boyland, who has an extensive background in nuclear engineering and national defense, is the rightful heir in American fiction to Tom Clancy.- Paul Williams, author of: The Day of Islam, Osama’s Revenge, The Al Qaeda Connection, Dunces of Doomsday, and The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Crusades

 A spirit to cheer for.

The book may open with a tragedy of incalculable proportions but thereafter the spirit that made this country truly great is paramount. The characters exemplify the clarity of thought and purposefulness of action that is required to survive in the life and death struggle with Islam. Resting on these themes is a story that is simply exciting to read. I couldn't put it down. What I particularly liked was the realistic and accurate portrayal of the struggle we are in with Islam. I know this from the extensive research I had to do for my own non fiction work.- Michael Cappi, author of A Never Ending War

The Rings of Allah

by Lee Boyland

Fiction, Iraq/Afghanistan

$18.95

MWSA 2007 SILVER MEDAL

Radical Islam plans a devastating attack on the U.S. designed to bring the Great Satan to its knees, triggering the Clash of Civilizations that has been building for 1400 years. An exciting, techno-thriller that shows the vulnerability of western civilization to terrorists with weapons of mass destruction. Yes, it can be done, and the Rings of Allah tells a thrilling story of such a plan.

REVIEWS

Thank Allah it's fiction, because it will scare the hell out of you!  Author Lee Boyland puts his extensive special weapons background to use in spinning this completely believable tale of al-Qaeda's next step after 9-11. Leftover Soviet technology from the beginning of the Cold War falls into al-Qaeda's hands, and they establish an intricate network in order to place five atomic devices in five US cities. The US gets word of the attack, but will it be in time? Boyland does a great job of mixing good character development with great technical background in order to create this story. Technical readers will appreciate his attention to detail as he relates and educates the reader on the workings of gun-type atomic weapons. Literature advocates will respect how he uses significant events to develop his main characters. Many new writers fall into the trap of trying to tell too much of the story, but Boyland avoids this by jumping sometimes a year ahead in the story in order to keep things moving. A great action story that is just a bit too possible, this is definitely worth it for action and techo fans alike. - Rob Ballister, MWSA

The Rings of Allah is an exciting, at times harrowing journey into the future. The novel ensnares the reader and the ending is not for the faint of heart. A must read.” – Joe Weber, New York Times best-selling author

Beliefs, values, insight and rings.......The Rings of Allah" is a fascinating in-depth look into the world of radical Islamic terrorism. The technical knowledge of the author comes through in the minute detail of weapon systems and their use. The book, written in a chronological sequence of the development of the nuclear industry, gives the reader a detailed background of what we are faced with in the future. The plot was believable and the characters realistic as their lives were woven together in a tapestry of intrigue and human drama that pitted the beliefs of radical Islamic terrorists against mainstream American democratic values. The story keeps the reader connected to the real-life events as they unfold in a suspenseful battle to save America from nuclear holocaust. Even though this is a fictional plot, it is a must-read for those who are interested in what we are faced with from the radical terrorists because it can evolve into a morbid reality. The ending is spell-binding and unpredictable, and will leave the reader with an unspoken sense of what can happen in our country if we don't take action. – Philip W. Hell Hawks! is the story of the band of young American fighter pilots, and their gritty, close-quarters fight against Hitlers vaunted military. The "Hell Hawks" were the men and machines of the 365th Fighter Group. Beginning just prior to D-Day, June 6, 1944, the groups young pilots (most were barely twenty years old and fresh from flight training in the United States) flew in close support of Eisenhowers ground forces as they advanced across France and into Germany. They flew the rugged, heavily armed P-47 Thunderbolt, aka the Jug. Living in tents amid the cold mud of their front-line airfields, the 365ths daily routine had much in common with that of the G.I.s they supported. Their war only stopped with the Nazi surrender on May 8, 1945. During their year in combat, the Hell Hawks paid a heavy price to win the victory. Sixty-nine pilots and airmen died in the fight across the continent. The Groups 1,241 combat missions -- the daily confrontation of sudden, violent death -- forged bonds between these men that remain strong sixty years later. This book will tell their story, the story of the Hell Hawks.

REVIEWS:

Veteran aviation author Dorr and astronaut a Jones have produced a riveting account of the gritty and unheralded war fought by young Thunderbolt pilots of the Ninth Air Force. Through dozens of interviews, the authors let the voices of pilots and ground crewmen tell what it was like to fly daily into the teeth of Luftwaffe fighters and Wehrmacht flak to help win the victory in Europe. This book represents the 17 other Ninth Air Force fighter-bomber combat groups.
